Slow studio produces handmade ceramic tableware that is both contemporary and rustic. As a designer / maker I create each piece one-at-a-time on my potter's wheel in my studio in western Massachusetts. I do not slip cast anything in moulds (a mode of industrial fabrication usually used in mass production).
The “slow” in Slow Studio refers to a philosophy of living and to the slow food movement which strives to preserve traditional and regional cuisine, organic farming and the sustainability of local ecosystems. The concept of “slow” also symbolizes a slowing down of life’s pace in order to make the elements of daily life more fulfilling. The special objects I createare intended to help further this endeavor.
As a designer, I believe that the method of making should be considered in the design of an object or in the production of a line of ware. By employing simple and direct design solutions I strive to create objects that are unique, harmonious, and eminently functional.
I also believe that design and making processes should reflect natural time cycles. Objects (and foods) made too quickly lack flavor and integrity. In an effort to employ a process which is environmentally and socially sustainable I handmake my modern tableware in small batches.
